The BSBI Recording App
This is now the method favoured by the BSBI recorders for you to enter botanical records in Hampshire.
-
If you record extensively in species groups other than vascular plants, then
the iRecord app may suit your purposes better. Records on iRecord will
still find their way to the BSBI's Distribution Database, but may take longer.
-
If you occasionally send a few random records, then we recommend using the
spreadsheet form for casual recording provided on this web site.
How do I obtain the App?
Registration is free. If you are a BSBI member, you can simply request the BSBI to give you a registration, stating your membership number. If you do not already have full access to the county records on the BSBI Distribution Database and want to see all detailed records to help your recording or research efforts, please contact the county recorder for your part of the counties to provide a statement of support to BSBI HQ.
If you are not a BSBI member but can fairly reliably identify a good range of British plants and are making substantial numbers of records, please email the appropriate county recorders to make yourself known, so that they can include you on their lists for verifying records and provide you with feedback. If they don't already know you, please give some detail about your interests and the part of the county you live in. You can then register for the App. If you wish to have full access to the county records, please include a brief note on your recording, survey or reasearch aims in the note to the recorder (note that this will only be given if you show serious interest in recording or a serious study or research project - wanting to photograph all the orchids in the county would not qualify!).

Using the App
You can use the App on desktop, laptop, tablet or smart phone. Once you have registered, you can install it on multiple devices, and when a device has connected to the internet your recording data will automatically be shared with all your other connected devices and with the BSBI's database, where it goes into a "holding pen" awaiting review by the verifiers.
This allows you to record directly in the field making use of facilities like your device's GPS to record plant locations and camera to attach photos to help with verification. If you prefer to record on paper in the field, you can continue to do so and enter up your records at home. You can update or delete your previously entered records.
The BSBI web site provides extensive documentation on using the App. You will also find some tips and recommendations on getting the best out of the App on this web site.
IMPORTANT: how we use your data
By submitting your plant records, you agree that:
- The BSBI recorders in Hampshire may hold your records on databases.
- Your records may be shared with other members of the recording community in Hampshire and with the BSBI nationally. Nationally, they may be used in national recording schemes and held on the BSBI central Distribution Database. Access to full record details on this database is currently restricted to authorised users, but national policy may change over time.
- Summary details of your records, not including your name, will be used to feed data to this web site.
- The BSBI recorders may pass records to third parties in the county (including the Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust) and use them in publications.
